Read time:
7 minutes

This is probably just a little bragging story, but it feels good to see how 8 months of careful planning, 3 months of breaking and rebuilding and countless hours of hard work all comes together. This is the short story of how our new website was built on a brand new domain, and got onto page 1 of Google for a target keyword in less than 2 months.

I think its safe to say being top of page 1 of Google for business keywords is the gold standard of all SEO efforts.

Being on page 1 of Google means more people see your brand. It means more people click through to your website, leading to more leads and sales! But SEO normally takes between 6-12 months, so we were amazed to see that our new website has already breached page 1 for one of our chosen keywords.

So how did we do it?

Well, first of its important to note that search engines like Google makes about 200 hidden changes to ranking factors each year. Which means that it's possible but stupid to try and find the latest trick or gimmick to trick Google into ranking your website well. These black hat tactics usually works for a month or so, before the rank hammer slams your website back into oblivion.

But by combining our own white hat digital marketing skills with expert SEO strategies from companies like MOZ, Neil Patel and Backlinko, we found a sustainable SEO formula for the foreseeable future.

Below you can find some tips on improving your website's SEO:

1. Create content that solves problems for the end user.

It might sound obvious, but when people search the web, they are trying to solve 1 of 3 queries. These are:

  1. Informational queries such as "How to bake a cake".
  2. Action/intent queries such as "Where to buy a cake".
  3. Navigational search queries like "The Cake Shop".

So by doing proper audience research, its actually possible to see what type of information potential customers are looking. Which means you can actually create content that solves these problems for them.

Remember that Google's mission is to solve problems in the least amount of time possible. So if your website continues to solve problems for visitors, Google will continue sending the sweet-sweet traffic your way!

2. Website Load Time

Searches done on mobile devices adds up to almost 70% of all searches now. If your website takes forever to load, people will get bored and click back to Google to find another website. So by reducing the time your website takes to load, not only are you giving people a better user experience, your are retaining more visitors that would have clicked off too.

A quick side note on this, because we are in Africa, internet connectivity is still super slow in some places. If your website is bloated with beautiful videos and large images, it will take forever to load. This will negatively affect your search engine rankings too.

3. Technical SEO Factors

Even though all websites should be built with a human first approach, your technical SEO should still be on point.

We don't want go into too much technical babble here, but here are some of the most SEO aspects to improve:

  1. Optimize your Meta Descriptions with your keywords.
  2. Ensure your website is mobile friendly and fully responsive.
  3. Target your keywords with your page titles.
  4. Compress your images to reduce their file size and load times.
  5. Website caching is enabled to ensure faster page load times.
  6. Amount of content exceeds 500 words per page where possible.

In closing

We also understand that Google algorithms are constantly changing and updating. Which means we will have to wait for a couple of months to see the real impact of our SEO efforts. But it is super exciting to see our hard work paying off so quickly.
